What I Miss About Texas
Being here in New Zealand has been awesome, and the views are absolutely stunning. It blows my mind how beautiful and diverse this country is. It's amazing that you could be in the mountains snowboarding one moment, then drive two hours to the coast and enjoy the surf. I couldn't ask to be in a more beautiful place, or to be surrounded by more hospitable people.
I never thought that I would miss San Marcos, or even Texas in general.. but I was quite wrong. I guess you don't really realize what you've got 'til it's gone. For starters, I've been here in New Zealand for almost five months now, and I can't honestly say that it feels like home. Even after settling into my own room, and buying my own car, I still feel like I'm just a visitor passing through.
On top of that, I miss everything being in a close vicinity. I was pretty spoiled being able to drive five minutes to work, fifteen minutes to the mall, or ten minutes to the movies. Here, it's so crazy that we'd have to drive at least an hour to get to the movies or do any shopping. I live at least fifteen minutes away from work, and I even groan about that. It's quite alright though, at least the drives here are quite nice compared to the straight, congested roads in the states.
I think the thing I miss most about Texas though, is the food. Torchy's, Pluckers, Kobe, Railyard, Chipotle, Casa Maria's, Mamacitas, Rogelio's.. There were so many awesome places to eat in San Marcos alone, and I definitely took that for granted. Authentic Mexican food is gold. The burgers here are decent, and the lamb is pretty good, but nothing quite compares to the small taco joints from home. It was also really nice being able to go out for margaritas on a hot summer day; you won't find a decent margarita here without having to make one yourself.
Of course I couldn't forget my awesome friends and family back home. I love and miss you guys tons :) Thanks for being so supportive and sending me all the crazy junk food and American crap that I've been craving.
Oh, and I miss my cowboy boots :(
